Mine Topçubaşı Çilingiroğlu, PhD. Ottoman Architecture of the 18th-20th Century

Starting from 18th century, the Ottoman Empire experienced a policy change to align with occidental standards and to be gradually integrated with the European world. The Ottoman architecture and urban development were not exempt from these mainly ruler-pioneered efforts. The confrontation of the traditional Ottoman architectural organization and practice with European architecture triggered the creation of new indigenous forms and trends in Ottoman architecture, which marked the beginning of the so-called “westernization in Ottoman architecture”. The Tanzimat reforms and its reflections on urban reorganization as well as the introduction of foreign architects in Ottoman capital city, brought forward an even closer follow-up of European architectural trends, orientalism included. As for the comprehensive urban changes and technological novelties of the late nineteenth century against a backstage of highly multi-cultured and pluralist society, they resulted in the reign of eclecticism, followed by a considerable number of Art Nouveau applications. In parallel with the second constitution and the rise of nationalism which continued well into the creation of the nation state out of the declining empire,the two centuries long westernization era finally concluded with a counter argument praising national architecture,hence the First National Architectural Movement, followed by Second National Architectural Movement and Modern Architecture. Mine Topcubasi Cilingiroglu, Born in İstanbul, she graduated from Yıldız Technical University Faculty of Architecture Architecture Department in 1997. She received master and phD. degrees in Istanbul Technical University  Architecture Department Restoration programme. She has published articles on different aspects of conservation and restoration of built heritage and is currently working as an assistant professor at Fatih Sultan Mehmet University.
